ERC Lagos State Celebrate 75th World International Student's Day.
ERC Lagos State Chapter stand In solidarity with students all over the world to celebrate world international students day. International students day is a students activism observance day all over the world to commemorate the Nov 17th 1939 students uprising in University of Prague at Czech Republic where nine student's and professors were executed without trial.
The message of hope from this uprising was that, there is hope for students activisms/struggles to survive. It also shows that students have always been victims of oppression from the past and that it is only through a continuous struggle that we can end students oppression.
Hitherto, international students day has been a day to raise observation in students community and within our jurisdiction, ERC Lagos State shall do this without prejudice, fear or favoritism.
First and foremost, it is noteworthy to raise observation on the growing population of Lagos State students at all levels which has made it clear that there is need for expansion and construction of new academics institutions in Lagos State considering the enormous resources of Lagos State amidst other state, base on this, it is evident that Lagos State is not a state to be seen with low standards of education as a result of lack of fund as such there is need for increase in the funding of education in Lagos State with respect to the UNESCO 26% budgetary allocation to education. Doing this will Lagos State fulfill his constitutional responsibility of providing public education as a right to all Lagosians and we are confident that a proper public education at all levels will give birth to a better and a greater Lagos State.
Also, It's important to point out the level of degeneration of genuine students activism and struggle and also the ideological decadence in our students community. Over the years, student leaders and students are known to be a clear cut, sharp minded and deep rooted conscious class on political, social and economic matters in the society however the reverse is the case today, there comes the need to begin ideological education of Nigerian Students to reshape their thinking inorder to take genuine steps towards the advancement of students struggle.
Also, it's important to state emphatically the undue victimisation of students leaders and banning of students union activities that has become rampant among school managements specifically in Lagos State. As of present, three Schools student's union, Yaba College of Technology, University of Lagos and Federal College of Education Akoka is under ban for protesting against bad welfare conditions of living, among others. Ultimately, this anti students attack by schools management will kill the political, social and economic initiatives of students and students leaders and thus make them a political dogmat. Therefore ERC Lagos State Chapter hereby place demands for immediate lifting of ban on the aforementioned schools students Union and reinstatement of suspended student's leaders.
Following on this, its important to call on the leadership of NANS JCC Lagos State Axis to launch campaign and raise genuine demands on the above observation in Lagos State students community with a collaborative efforts from ideologically sound organisations that are committed to advancing the struggle of education and students activism. Also NANS JCC LAGOS should henceforth begin to organize student's campaigns across campuses in Lagos State with a view of strengthening the consciousness and struggles of NANS Lagos State Students instead of an opportunistic walk to the Governor Office in commemoration of the International Students Damy which would have no positive implication for d struggles of Nigerian students in Lagos state.
In conclusion, the struggle for quality education is a struggle of all layers of the society therefore we call on all layers of the society government, NGO's to provide needed support for the growth and development and Nigeria educational system. Once again Happy International Students Day.
Thanks.
Signed
